YONECO trained 1 75 out of school girls on how they can make reusable sanitary pads in Mulanje District under the Adolescent Girls and Young Women Project (AGYW) in the month of June.
This comes as one major development in the district as government together with other organizations are striving day in and out to keep girls in school and empower them economically. Speaking with one of the participants, Eliza Maonga said the knowledge and skills she has gained from the training will enable her to start sewing more pads and sell them so that she can ably be financial dependent. Eliza also emphasized that the training will also benefit her friends in the village as she will share the skills with them.
Concurring with Eliza is the project coordinator Blessings Sabawo he said the training is one stepping stone towards the country’s development because it will enable girls to start up small enterprises from the skills they have gained and will be financially stable and dependent. Sabawo also said the training will encourage those still in school not to miss classes once they are menstruating because they will have all the necessary and required materials to keep them in school.
Comprehensive Action for Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) Project is implemented in Mulanje district by YONECO and MAGGA with financial support from Global Fund through Action Aid and Christian Aid, and it aims at reducing the spread of HIV, reducing school dropout rates among girls and ending gender based violence.
